DPAC Community Update – June 2021

Posted on Tuesday / June 22

June 2021 Update.

It is June! We have all made it through one of the most challenging and trying school year’s in recent memories. We have so much to step back and reflect on. We have so much to lament, as it relates to the pandemic, to threats to our democracy, or to the persistent virus of racism in this country. But, we also have so much to celebrate. Our scholars have truly overcome some incredible obstacles this year and persevered in pursuit of their bright futures.

So many of you deserve recognition for making this year a success:

  • Scholars: Thank you for showing your grit and perseverance to make this year a good one, despite the distance and new learning platforms
  • Teachers & Staff: Your ability to move from virtual school to in-person in a blink, all while keeping high expectations was inspiring
  • Families: I appreciate your willingness to adapt to a new mode of learning while partnering with DPAC to hold your scholar to our high standards
  • Community: I am grateful to educate scholars with community members who continue to provide us resources and support to make our school thrive

This year was a true team effort and I look forward to all the great successes 2021-2022 will bring.

Take time to rest this month. In a few weeks I will email the DPAC community with our ‘Start of the Schoo Year’ email!

In Partnership,
Adam Johnson

DPACES Parent Update

Posted on Tuesday / August 11

August 11, 2020

Hello Families/Guardians,

As we begin Virtual Learning together, I want to thank you in advance for the support you continue to provide to your scholar. This letter will map out how to support your child during our virtual learning phase. To view your scholar’s daily schedule, click here. To access this letter in Spanish, click here.

  • Clever Accounts:

Your scholars will log on to Clever.com to access all of their online platforms. Teachers will have their Zoom Sessions available on their teacher page. Your scholar will be able to click on the appropriate image and go directly to the live session with the teacher. Please see the example below.

Clever allows scholars to access every online platform they need to be successful. They should not have to access any other websites.

Here are additional resources to help with accessing Clever.

      1. How to Login to Clever with QR code (K & 1 Parent Resource)
      2. How to Login to Clever Without Badge (K-5 Parent Resource)

2.Google Classroom:

General Use

Google Classroom will be used as an asynchronous library. This is where your scholar can access previously taught lessons. These lessons are not live, but rather recording of live sessions posted for scholars to reference should they need more time.

Wednesdays

On Wednesday scholars will not have live class sessions with their Gen Ed teacher. Instead they will access pre-recorded lessons for Social Studies or Science, P.E, Art,  and Music.

If your scholar has an IEP or receives any related services they may be logged on live with their ACT teacher.

  1. i-Ready:

i-Ready is an online platform that allows teachers to assign scholars lessons virtually. i-Ready has a diagnostic assessment that all students must take initially. This assessment is not graded and we ask that you refrain from assisting your scholar during this time. This assessment reads to scholars and is user friendly. We ask that you don’t assist so that we have a true picture of where your scholar is beginning the year.

i-Ready will be used to assign your scholar reading homework each week.

There are many other resources on Clever, should you need any more assistance or information please contact your scholar’s teacher directly.

In Partnership,

Anastasia Lyons-Doyle

Summer Academy will run from June 8 through July 30, continuing the use of virtual learning platforms. DPAC scholars entering all grades between Kindergarten and Eighth are eligible to enroll in our after school programs by completing this form. The program schedule is available here and additional details about some of the programs are included below:

Zedu Plus

  • Loving Lit
    • Category: Literature
    • Description: Reading literature is one of the foundational skills that every scholar needs in order to succeed in middle school and beyond. The Loving Lit class will have scholars reading a six chapter short story, answering questions, and developing ideas. Each week scholars will receive a chapter or two to read, multiple choice questions to answer, and a short paragraph to write.  Each lesson is accompanied by a Youtube video that will assist them. Scholars will also get a wonderful chance to have their writing skills checked with personal notes for improvement. AND THE BEST PART? The short story is a SCARY STORY!
    • Platforms: Google Classroom and YouTube
  • RACER Writing
    • Category: Literature
    • Description: One of the most difficult aspects for DPAC scholars to master is the RACER paragraph.  Scholars have to put several different parts together to create a seamless idea.  RACER Writing will help your scholar accomplish that.  Each week they will get two articles to read and then a RACER paragraph to complete.  Each lesson comes with a Youtube video that helps the scholars plan and create the perfect RACER.  After submission, each paragraph will be checked by a teacher and comments and pointers will be given.  This is a great class for those scholars that want to improve the writing skills needed for their middle and high school classes.
    • Platforms: Google Classroom and YouTube
  • Creative Writing (Walker)
    • Category: Literature
    • Description: Students learn structure that helps them express themselves in writing narrative and expository essays. With writing assignments such as “please describe the most disgusting meal that you’ve ever eaten”, this course strengthens students’ ability to write a well structured effective essay. Mini-lessons ensure that students develop informative and creative writing skills so that they come to express complex ideas clearly.
    • Platforms: Google Classroom and Google Sites
  • Sugar & Elite Mentoring (STARS)
    • Category: Human Development
    • Description: The Program’s goal is to reduce the number of teen pregnancies, suicides, and high school dropouts in Southern Nevada by providing Mentoring, Tutoring, Life Skills Workshops and Civic Engagement. The program focuses on increasing the skill sets that are needed to be self-sufficient in today’s society.  This program is dedicated to teaching youth how to set goals and overcome life issues.
    • Platforms: Zoom and Google Classroom
  • ZeduPlus (Zedu)
    • Category: Technology, Applied Technology, Human Development
    • Description: Interactive and engaging LIVE sessions every day from Monday – Thursday with engaging and interactive STEAM curriculum that will keep the participants in the loop of reading 11 interactive books that will improve their reading, literacy, and vocabulary. In contrast, participants will be engaged in interactive exercises in science, math, coding, and typing.

DPACSS Trimester 3 Testing

Posted on Tuesday / May 19

Good Afternoon DPAC Families and Scholars,

We hope this email finds you well. I am writing to provide more information about final exams. Due to Distance Learning, exams will look quite different this year. Scholars are still expected to take exams online as they are designed to help us understand what scholars know and how best to prepare for next year. If you have any questions after reading this email, please reach out to me at adaniels@democracyprep.org

Logistics

Scholars will take T3 Exams in all Core Content areas: Math, English, Science, and History (add Foreign Language in High School.) All T3 Exams will be released digitally to scholars on Tuesday, May, 26 at 8:00 am and scholars will have until Friday, May 29 at 11:59 pm to complete their exams. Scholars will have access to their exams through Google Classroom and Clever. Each exam has been designed to take scholars less than two (2) hours to complete. Below we have created a suggested schedule for scholars to help them complete 100% of their exams on-time.

Day of the week Middle School  High School
Tuesday 05/26 Math Math & Foreign Language
Wednesday 05/27 English  English
Thursday 05/28 Science & History Science & History
Friday 05/29

*We have left Friday blank as a buffer day. We highly discourage scholars from waiting until Friday to complete their exams.

Grading

T3 Exams are roughly worth 20% of a scholar’s final T3 grade. T3 Exams will be included in T3 Coursework, thus scholars will not receive a separate grade on their report card indicating the exam grade. Due to the challenges imposed by Distance Learning, we decided it would be in the best interest of our scholars to decrease the weight T3 Exams had on final grades.

Summer Academy

Next week, DPAC Secondary will send out letters informing families of their scholar’s Summer Academy status. For scholars joining Summer Academy, we will place scholars in one of two categories: Promoted or Summer Academy. Scholars who achieve promotion status will have the choice to opt-into Summer Academy (though it is not mandatory) and will receive skill-appropriate work to keep their brains active over the Summer. Scholars who are placed in Summer Academy are strongly encouraged to attend digital Summer Academy. The goal of this program is to remediate any skill gaps to ensure scholars are as prepared as possible prior to entering the next grade level. There will be a lot of work to make sure all scholars are on grade level when we return to school. This year Summer Academy will be 100% digital and participation is optional and will be determined by the scholar’s family. Advisory teachers will be calling all families individually on Wednesday, June 3 to answer all questions.

I appreciate you taking the time to read this email in its entirety. Please make time this week to create your family’s strategic plan for your scholar to complete their exams. Discussing exams with your scholar will significantly increase their motivation and decrease their testing anxiety.

Have a wonderful rest of your day.

One Team,

Mr. Daniels

COMMUNITY UPDATE – MAY 2020

Spring 2020 Update

In just a few short months, life as we know it has changed significantly and there has been no exception at Democracy Prep. We have moved all learning online across our entire network. Within a matter of days, our school mobilized to distribute more than 600 devices to scholars and ensured they all had access to WiFi by either helping them connect for free a local cable/internet service or by providing MiFis to the family for free.

Our team has displayed incredible adaptability and innovation during an uncertain time. Our teachers jumped into online teaching without missing a beat which is no small feat. Even though this has been an incredibly difficult time for our country, our school continues to provide teaching, learning, and most important of all, JOY! You can see examples of that joy by searching the hashtag #DPgoesthedistance on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

The remainder of the school year will look unlike any other we have experienced, but we will continue to hold our end of year celebrations sacred — even in virtual spaces.

Here’s to closing out the school year and keeping the DPAC community strong!

With much gratitude,
Adam Johnson, Executive Director

After School Programs

Posted on Friday / May 1

(Remote) Mini-Mathematicians (The M&M’s)

This distance math tutoring program aims at filling in the gaps in 2nd graders understanding of math concepts. Math builds like blocks and if one is missing it can negatively affects a scholar’s understanding. Through the use of online Zoom meetings, Khan Academy lessons, Kahoot! & more, this program seeks to strengthen the students conceptual understanding so that as they grow in their education, they have a strong mathematical foundation. This program is strongly recommended for young scholars that need a comprehensive review of math fundamentals.

Grade Level Requirement: 2nd
Club advisor: Eve Gray

(Remote) Readers R Leaders

If a student reads 20 minutes a day at home, they will hear 1.8 million words per year. They will have read for over 600 hours by 6th grade and on standardized tests, they will likely score better than 90% of their peers. This compelling data on the benefits of encouraging your child to read is the motivation behind our “Readers R Leaders” distance tutoring club. Scholars will learn to use phonics and phonemic awareness to build/strengthen their reading fluency. They will learn to use text clues, pictures, and critical thinking to increase comprehension skills. This program will also help to foster a love of reading through engaging read-alouds, group reading, literacy games and activities. This program is strongly recommended for young scholars that are beginning and developing readers.

DPACES Distance Learning Attendance

Posted on Thursday / March 26

With the move to distance learning, policies around attendance tracking have been adjusted. In addition to the graded work assigned, scholars must log on to DPAC distance learning tools every school day and log off at the end of every school day to be marked as Present.

  • Attendance will be marked as Present each day when the scholar logs in to clever.com/in/dpps on a browser (any browser, including any Chromebook, laptop, Mac, or PC).
  • Scholars log in to Clever with their email user name (typically firstname.lastname@scholar.democracyprep.org) and password. Email addresses can be confirmed and password reset requests may be made here.
  • All DPAC distance learning tools are available through Clever.

Remember, the scholar must log off at the end of each school day when they have completed their work for the day and log in at the beginning of the next day in order to be counted as present.

All DPACES teachers are maintaining active office hours during distance learning. A complete list of teachers and their contact information is available here.

Outside Food Restrictions during the week of March 23-27

Posted on Friday / March 13

The DPAC food program is supported by the Nevada Department of Agriculture as a part of the National School Lunch Program. An audit of our program will take place during the week of March 23-27. During this time, outside foods will be restricted and anything arriving on campus will be turned away. This will include food intended for birthday celebrations. We are certain that this will impact some scholars and families and we are truly appreciative of everyone’s understanding.

Scholars will still be allowed to bring their lunch from home.

If your scholar is celebrating a birthday between March 23 and March 27, please plan on bringing non-food treats or consider working with your scholar’s teacher to schedule the celebration sooner during the week of March 16-20 or postponing the celebration until after March 30.

We are grateful for your flexibility and consideration.
